a and /3. 85. Canes Venatict — The Hounds of Bootes— are East of Ursa Major ; the constellation con-tains 25 visible stars. A line from Dubhe, throughPhecda, produced 19° farther, would touch a, ofthe 2nd magnitude, and named Cor Caroli — the Heart of Charles. The star is located in the heartof one of two hounds named Asterion and Chara,which, under the guidance of Bootes, were sup-posed to follow the two Bears around the Pole.The hounds are technically known as Canes Ve-natici, but only Chara is shown on our maps, aand Alioth are pointers to the pole. 86. Leo — The Lion. This is now the sixth inorder of the Zodiacal Constellations; it contains95 discernible stars, and is situated Eastward ofCancer, but is best located independently; or byreference to Ursa Major. It is represented on theglobe as a huge animal with flowing mane, openmouth, and long tail; the body just North of theEcliptic, and the hinder foot dipping below theEquinoctial.
