Reason: This is one of a set of ahistorical arms contained in later, Western European sources such as Rietstap's Armorial, that are not attested in the Byzantine period. The Byzantines did not use heraldry in the Western sense, nor are any family-specifc emblems attested in the available sources. English: The alleged arms of the Komnenos [Comnenus] family under en:Isaac I Komnenos (1057-1059). A military family originating from en:Paphlagonia, the en:Komnenos dynasty of en:Byzantine Emperors began when Isaac Komnenos, a general of the Eastern armies of en:Michael VI, led a successful coup against Michael and was proclaimed emperor in 1057. He is credited as being the first en:Byzantine Emperor to have adopted the en:double-headed eagle as an emblem.
