The Sixteenth(Canadian Scottish), including men fromVancouver, Winnipeg, Victoria and Ham-ilton, took part in the famous fight for theorchard at that point. The gallant Tenthalso made an attack on a position nearbyknown as Bexhill, and suffered 300 cas-ualties. Parts of the Fifth and Seventhbattalions, a squadron of the StrathconaHorse, aided in this fighting, and theselater were reinforced by the Second Bat-talion and the Royal Canadian Dragoons.The Second Brigade lost one-fourth of itsnumbers in this see-saw fighting. On the 21st the Canadian Division wasremoved to the south end of the Britishfront, near GivenJiy. Here the First Can-adian (Ontario) Battalion made an attackon Stony Mountain to assist a Britishattack on tlie left. Out of 23 combatantofficers who wentl into tliis action, onlythree missed death or wounding. Thethree included the commander, Lt.-ColouelHill. The fatalities included Lt.-ColonelBeecher, the second in command. Afterthis engagement, the Division was movedinto a quiet part of the front at Ploeg-street, just north of the Belgian frontier,where the First Dominion Day in thetrenches was celelirated on the 1st of July.
