Əslində Windows Server digər adı "Longhorn" olaraq da bilinir. Microsoft Başkanı Bill Gates, rəsmi adını (Windows Server 2008) 16 May 2007 WinHEC'dəki açılış mərasimində demişdir.
27 iyul 2005 tarixində Beta 1 dərc edilib. 23 May 2006 tarixində WinHEC 2006'da Beta 2 elan edilmiş və Beta 3 xalqa açıq-aşkar bir şəkildə 25 aprel 2007 istifadəyə buraxılmışdır. Buraxılış namizədi 0, 24 Sentyabr 2007 tarixində xalqın hamısına nümayiş etdirilmiş və Release namizədi 1 xalqa 5 dekabr 2007 tarixində dərc edilmişdir. Windows Server 2008, 4 fevral 2008 tarixində istehsala başlamışdır. 27 fevral 2008 tarixində isə rəsmən başlamışdır.
