Miçiqan gölü adını Miçiqan ştatından deyil tam tərsi ştat adını bu göldən alır. Göl öz adını ''mishigami'' sözündən götürmüşdür, Ociba dilində «''böyük su''» mənasını kəsb edir. Gölü ilk görən avropalı [[1634]]-cü ildə fransız [[Jan Nikole]] olmuşdur.
