Sokotsu-şi (粗忽市) – günahı olan samurayın günahını yumaq üçün etdiyi intihar növüdür. Təqsirkarlığın bir nümunəsi də özünə xidmət edən birinə əsəblə hücum etməkdir və bu ölümlə cəzalandırıla bilən bir haldır. Adətən intihar seçimi təklif olunurdu. Samuray ağasının döyüşdə və ya sui-qəsdçi tərəfindən öldürülməsindən qorumaq vəzifəsini yerinə yetirə bilmədiyi üçün də intihar edə bilərdi.
Seppuku qadağan olunmasına baxmayaraq, günümüzə qədər mövcud olmuşdur. Bunun səbəbi isə Yaponiya cəmiyyətində qəbahətli olmağın böyük utanc və şərəfsizlik olaraq qəbul edilməsidir.
