Kraliça Viktoriya və Konsort-şahzadə Albertin ikinci oğludur. 1866-cı ildə Edinburq hersoqu təyin edildi. Ancaq Saksen-Koburq-Qota hersoqu olan əmisinin varisi olmadığı üçün bu hersoqluğun vəliəhdi oldu və əmisinin vəfatının ardından 1893-cü ildə Koburqda taxta çıxdı.
